UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman will step down

Dec 5, 2015

Divina Grossman, Chancellor of UMass Dartmouth, announced Friday evening that she will be stepping down from her position on Dec. 24.

Citing two unnamed campus officials, The Boston Globe reported last week that UMass President Martin Meehan planned to remove Grossman from the position by the end of the academic year. In the time that Grossman has held the position, private fundraising, enrollment and the number of professors on campus have reportedly gone down. Facility maintenance has increased.

Meehan said in a statement on Friday that he respected her decision and the service she provided to the campus community over the past three and a half years.

Grossman worked as the vice president of engagement at Florida International University before assuming the role as chancellor at UMass. She will go on sabbatical following her resignation and will return as a staffer on campus.

Grossman worked on several campaigns during her tenure, including the UMassDTransform2020 campaign launched in the fall of 2014 that aimed to garner national attention for the university for being a research university south of Boston. The Living Gallery Project added more art to the campus.

The university also started several expansions during her time, such as the expansion of the Charlton College of Business and the expansion at the School for Marine Science and Technology.

The rate of freshmen staying on into their sophomore year went up in the past three years, from 74 percent to 79 percent.
