University student invited to attend Trump speech
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) handpicked a University of Massachusetts Dartmouth student to attend President Donald Trump’s address to Congress with her on February 28.
Warren invited UMass student and Iraqi refugee Tiba Faraj to go to Washington, D.C. with her during a joint session between the House of Representatives and Senate, according to a press release from Warren’s office.
Faraj’s family fled to Jordan in 2006 after her father was shot while working for an American-backed development organization and left permanently disabled. That started the family’s lengthy process of securing refugee status to enter the United States.
The family was granted admission in 2010 after extensive screening, and settled in Lynn, where Faraj attended Lynn Classical High School. After graduating in 2014, she was accepted into UMass Dartmouth, where she is now a junior studying accounting and minoring in international relations.
"We are so proud of Tiba for pursuing her own American dream while overcoming the challenges she and her family have faced," UMass Dartmouth interim Chancellor Peyton R. Helm said via press release. "Her success is an inspirational testament to her own perseverance and to the enduring values of our university, Commonwealth, and our country."
According to the press release, Faraj interned with State Representative Brendan Crighton and also enjoys volunteering.
