University's student-athlete passes due to diabetes-related complications
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth community is mourning the loss of a lacrosse player following complications related to Type 1 Diabetes.
Sean Peters, a Crime and Justice major and four-year member of the men's lacrosse team, passed away on April 29 at the age of 22, according to a UMass press release.
"Our hearts are broken by Sean's passing," Interim Chancellor Peyton R. Helm wrote to students, faculty, and staff on April 30. "There are no words that can adequately express the profound loss being felt today by his family, friends, teammates, and classmates. All we can do is hold close those who loved Sean and support them in the difficult days ahead."
Peters was a four-year letter winner for the Corsairs, and was recognized by the Athletics Department on Senior Day, said Athletic Director Amanda Van Voorhis. He was the "epitome of a Corsair" with his academic-athletic life balance, according to the press release.
"Sean was an outstanding young man with great integrity and character," added Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Terry Corcoran. "He represented everything that was good about college athletics."
Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs David Milstone added that the university is looking into holding a campus memorial with the family, and that counseling staff is available to meet with members of the community, both as individuals and in groups.
On the field, Peters appeared in 49 career games. He started in 24 games, as well as in all 13 of his contests during his senior campaign. This year, he had 23 goals and 14 assists for 37 points. He registered four goals in a game twice this season, including a career-high seven-point performance in UMass Dartmouth's 19-5 win over Becker on April 10. In his final game on April 22, he tallied two goals and two assists against Western Connecticut in a 14-8 win.
Sean came to UMass Dartmouth from Medway High School.
