Upcoming dates to dispose of tires, papers, and other waste
Dates have been set to give residents the opportunity to dispose of certain waste, such as old tires, confidential paperwork, household hazardous wastes, and medications.
Tire Drop-off Day is on September 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Shawmut Avenue Transfer Station on 1103 Shawmut Ave. in New Bedford.
The fee to dispose of a car tire is $1 per tire, $5 per light duty truck tire, and $15 per heavy duty truck tire.
They will not accept any commercial loads, tires with a rim diameter larger than 24 inches, and no off road equipment tires.
To dispose of your tires you will need an ID to show you are from the Dartmouth or New Bedford area, as well as a cash or check to pay for the disposal.
On September 16 from 9 a.m. to noon the parking lot across from the New Bedford City Hall at the corner of William St. and North 6th St. there will be a Paper Shredding Day. The disposal is open to all New Bedford residents and residents in the surrounding communities.
The fee is $5 per box weighing no more than 40 pounds per box. They will also be disposing of old hard drives for $5 per hard drive. The papers being disposed must be removed from any folder or binder, but paperclips and staples do not need to be removed. The fee must be paid by cash or check only.
On September 23 from 9 a.m. to noon there will be a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day at the Crapo Hill Landfill at 300 Samuel Barnet Blvd. in New Bedford.
They will accept waste such as oil-based paints, paint thinner, and waste fuels. They will not accept latex paints (dry out and throw in trash), motor oil, antifreeze, fluorescent light bulbs, TVs, or propane tanks. These items can go to a local transfer station.
The maximum amount of waste accepted is 25 gallons or 25 pounds. This disposal is only for household residents in areas of Dartmouth, Freetown, and New Bedford. An ID is required for disposal.
On October 28, the New Bedford Police Department on 871 Rockdale Ave. in New Bedford will be holding a National Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help residents safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs.
Residents may only dispose of pills or patches, no liquids, needles or syringes. The disposal is open to all New Bedford residents and residents of the surrounding communities.
All of these events are sponsored by the City of New Bedford, the Town of Dartmouth, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Greater New Bedford Refuse District.
