Upcoming opportunities to shred paper; recycle tires, needles, paint

Through a collaborative effort between the Town of Dartmouth, the City of New Bedford, and the Greater New Bedford Refuse District, special recycling events will be held over the next few weeks.

September 17, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Community residents and businesses can have their confidential documents shredded for $5 per box of papers (weighing under 40 pounds) at the parking lot on William and North Sixth streets in New Bedford. Hard drives will also be destroyed for a fee of $5.

September 24, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Tires will be collected on  at the Shawmut Avenue Transfer Station, 1103 Shawmut Avenue in New Bedford. With a valid ID, New Bedford and Dartmouth residents can dispose of car tires for $1 each, light duty truck tires for $5, and/or heavy duty truck tires for $15. Rims will also be collected. No commercial loads, no tires with a rim diameter above 24 inches, and no off-road equipment tires will be collected.

Dartmouth and New Bedford residents can also dispose of their needles, syringes, and lancets at the Shawmut Avenue Transfer Station, but they must be in a red biohazard container before the drop-off date.

October 22, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Household hazardous materials will be collected on  at Crapo Hill Landfill in New Bedford. New Bedford, Dartmouth, and Freetown residents with a valid ID can drop off waste such as oil-based paints, paint thinner, and waste fuels. No latex paints, motor oil, antifreeze, florescent lightbulbs, TVs, or propane tanks will be accepted.

October 22, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

A drug take-back day will be held at the New Bedford Police Department Headquarters, located at 871 Rockdale Avenue. Residents will be able to safely dispose of unwanted prescription pills anonymously and for free.
