Volleyball team winding season down with wins

With the regular season winding down, the Dartmouth High volleyball team are on the way to the postseason -- and padding the record on the way.

Dartmouth High’s volleyball team is heading into the postseason, and the team is padding its record along the way.

On October 23, the team defeated Somerset-Berkley 3-1. It was a hard-fought win, however, as the Indians struggled with errors. In the fourth set, the Raiders, down 2-1, rallied midway through, holding the Indians with one point to spare. The Indians took the set 25-23 for the win.

“It was a little shaky and my girls played like they were scared,” said Head Coach Rachel Lassey. “They don’t typically do that. Tonight was not our best game, but a win is a win.”

Despite those issues, Lassey noted the team’s record is now 13-3. Teammates are bonding, and the team has strong leadership and a crop of experienced players.

“I’ve got a great group of girls who are just as passionate about the game as I am,” Lassey said. “They’re super close too.”

Sarah Jorge, Lauryn Coelho, and Oona Clarke, the team’s three senior co-captains, are at the center of the team. All three have been on the team since their freshman year, and at this point have formed a close bond -- Lassey noted the trio now refers to themselves as “sisters.”

“We’re really good this year because we’re really close as a team,” Jorge said. “We’ve been really good at communicating and helping each other out, which is really nice. We’re all been friends for a while.”

The season has also been filled with highlights for teammates too.

“Beating New Bedford,” Jorge said.

“Undefeated New Bedford,” added Coelho.

As for what to expect in the postseason, Lassey said she hopes for a top five seed, and hopes to match up against New Bedford, a team she knows the team can beat again.

“If we land in a good position we can make it as far as they set their minds to,” Lassey said. “I’m excited they get really fired up for the big games and we usually pull through. I’m looking forward to a longer postseason than usual.”
