Volleyball tourney brings in $2,100 for international nonprofit

Dartmouth High School hasn’t had much luck in organizing volleyball tournaments as fundraising events, but when the National Honor Society decided that’s how it was going to raise money for an international nonprofit, students knew they had to think bigger.

Instead of sticking within school boundaries, they reached out to town officials, sports teams, and friends to support their cause. Ultimately, 24 teams signed up, including two teacher teams, an alumni team, and the Dartmouth Police.

“We did some community outreach. Our goal is a communal goal, not just within the Society,” said Victoria Costa, NHS president.

The group spent the past month organizing the fundraiser for The Citizens Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving educational opportunities in Pakistan, and raised a $2,100 donation, said Costa.

“The success that we’ve had is beyond what any of us expected,” she said.

The first-place team — Lexie Viveiros, Nathan Jones, Marquise Adams, Colin McCabe, Ethan Sherman, Luke Tisdelle, and Connor Moniz — won only bragging rights, said advisor Catherine Madsen.

Teams were placed in a bracket, and the first team to score 21 points moved on in the tournament. The shorter rounds helped keep the event within a two-hour limit, said NHS members.

Three courts were assembled in the high school gym so that six teams could play at one time. Each game also had its own referee and scorekeeper.

The tournament also raised funds by charging spectators $3-5 at the door of the November 22 event.
