Wareham woman builds comradery at annual hike (line dancing included)
About six women waited by the trailhead at the Slocum's River Reserve on February 5. A few of their friends were running late to the 10th annual Super Bowl hike. Ahead of them, nearly 300 other walkers had already started up the trail.
Once united, Colleen Roy led her group of about 10 women to catch up with the other hikers. The Wareham resident loves to walk, so when she saw the six-mile event — hosted by the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust and Westport Land Trust — on Facebook, she knew it would be a good time.
"These are my regulars," Roy said of her group. She started the South Eastern Massachusetts Walking Women's club in September with coworkers, but with family members and countless friends of friends joining, the group is already 66 women strong, she said.
Together, the group hikes faithfully every Monday after work, most Wednesdays, and concludes the week with a bigger hike on the weekends.
"Those ar the long walks," said Janet Bessey of West Wareham.
"Where we bring our lunches and wine," finished Roy.
Already, the group has completed hikes in Dartmouth, Wareham, and Marion, and listed the Blue Hills Reservation, Myles Standish State Forest, and Borderland State Park among their expeditions.
"I have all these hikes in my head, and I've always wanted to start this group," said Roy, explaining that now that her kids are grown and dogs are too old, she needed new walking partners.
The women trekked in soggy mud, across two rivers, over spongy, golden pine needles, and through one pig trail with the other Super Bowl hikers. The year's turnout doubled that of last year, said DNRT Outreach Coordinator Jim Bride.
"Last year was snowy. This year, the trails were in great shape," said Bride.
Hikers were allowed through privately owned farmlands, but also crossed the Dartmoor Farm Wildlife Management Area and Buzzards Bay Brewing before arriving at their final destination, the Westport Rivers Winery.
Hikers warmed by campfires, shopped the wine selection, and mingled, but unprotected by forest, the winds were more fierce.
Roy noticed Sherry Michael and Sue Theriault tapping their toes and stomping their feet to keep warm while waiting for the shuttle back to Slocum's River Reserve. With a bit of Roy's encouragement, the dancers led a group in basic line dancing steps to keep warm.
The Walking Women's next weekend venture will be a Valentine's Day hike on Sunday, February 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Myles-Standish State Forest. Visit S.E. MA Walking Women on Facebook for more details.
