Young softball team wraps up successful vacation week
Don’t let the young Dartmouth High softball team fool you. These girls mean business.
Without a single senior and a lineup dominated by sophomores, the Indians hold a 5-2 record after winning three April vacation games in a row. That includes a 24-2 win over league rival Barnstable, the team’s first league win of the season.
Despite the lack of seniors, Coach Beth Arguin thinks teammates have settled in quite well. Positions are filled and players are stepping up to the challenge, but she’s eyeing improvement in executing plays and reducing errors.
“We have to make our plays. Fewer mistakes is going to be key,” Arguin said.
She added it is the biggest challenge of managing a team so young.
“Once in awhile, they will make mistakes. I do think it’s going to help us in the long run in the years to come,” Arguin said.
As an example, Arguin pointed to Dartmouth’s two matchups against Durfee on April 15 and 20. The Indians took a 7-6 loss for the first game, owing in part to defensive errors.
The second time around, however, it was Durfee’s misplay that led to Dartmouth’s 3-1 win. Rachel Pereira drove in runners Lindsey Oliveira and Abigail Amaral from third and second base, respectively, after Durfee misplayed Pereira's foul ball.
“It was a mishit, but [Durfee] misplayed it and they weren’t really paying much attention to the runners on the bases, so we were able to score those two [runs],” Arguin explained.
Returning to school, the Indians faced a 7-4 loss to Somerset-Berkley on April 24.
