Dartmouth delegates invited to Devon, England

During the Select Board meeting Monday night, two representatives from the Sister City Delegation Committee spoke about an invitation to visit Dartmouth, Devon.

Officials from the English town have invited up to 20 delegates from Dartmouth to visit next spring. Visitors would arrive on May 18 and leave on May 23. The trip may come coupled with a formal protocol to make relations between the two towns official.

The town has a population of about 5,000 and is located in southwest England.

The mayor of Dartmouth, Devon, Rob Lyons, and his wife were both in Dartmouth, Massachusetts during the 350th anniversary celebration held last year.

“It’s right on the water with a river coming through it, separating two sides. There’s a naval college there, there’s a lot of boating. They sponsor a regatta, a music festival,” said committee member Sheila Koot, who has previously visited the town.

“I don’t think our town was specifically named after [Dartmouth, Devon], but, certainly, it was in their minds,” said Koot. “When the Mayflower set out, it had another ship with it, and [it] was disabled. They pulled into the coast of Dartmouth, Devon, and it was repaired there.”

“The people of Dartmouth Devon always figured we were named for them, which we most likely were,” she said.

Koot said that the committee and town officials are still deciding how airfare will be paid, but housing could be provided. She said she plans to meet with Town Administrator David Cressman next week to try to decide who will be going on the trip.

She said pairing up with other cities can allow for the trade of information and culture.

“It can lead to school children going there or coming here,” said Koot. “It can be involved as the two parties want it to be.”

The Town of Dartmouth is also sister cities with three towns in the Azores: Nordeste, Lagoa and Povoção.
