Dartmouth resident hosting 5K walk to benefit autoinflammation research

Sep 8, 2016

On September 10, Dartmouth resident Diane Fairbanks will be hosting a 5K walk to raise money and awareness of an autoinflammatory disease that took the life of her grandson, Zeke.

Zeke was born on a summer day in 2012, but a week later, the infant came down with a severe fever and diarrhea before passing away at 23 days old. Researchers were able to identify a rare genetic mutation which is also shared by Zeke’s father Erik and his 9-year-old son Bryan that causes widespread generalized inflammation. The inflammation became so severe that it led to a condition called Macrophage Activation Syndrome, which caused Zeke’s entire body to shut down.

Fairbanks’ 5K will benefit the Dr. Edward Behrens' Research Fund at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and will help fund research into the disease and other auto-inflammatory diseases.

The 5K walk is scheduled to begin at The Sail Loft on Elm Street in Padanaram at 10:45 a.m. The 5K will loop through the village and finish in front of the restaurant for lunch.
