Halloween goes to the dogs

Mary Driscoll’s two pomeranians — Speca and Prince — looked like oversized spiders. The dogs donned a set of oversized eyes and spider legs to march in Hidden Brook Veterinary Services’ third annual Halloween Pet Costume Parade on October 29.

Kevin Driscoll, Mary’s son, was the architect of the dogs’ costumes, although YouTube provided the inspiration.

“I saw a YouTube video of dogs wearing [the spider costumes]. They looked so cute,” he said.

The annual parade is now in its third year, said veterinarian Dr. Corinne Slaughter, who brought her own English springer spaniel Jimmy to the parade dressed in medical scrubs and a stethoscope.

“It’s just for fun,” Slaughter said. “[The pets] come here to be taken care of, but it’s so much more than that,” she said, pointing to the happy owners and their animals getting along together in the lobby after the parade.

About 10 dog owners participated, looking to their pets’ personalities and/or reputations for inspiration.

Crystal Carter celebrated rescue dog Milo’s love of food by wrapping him in a hotdog costume.

“Milo loves to eat,” Carter said. “He’s a big foodie.”

Diane Sylvia dressed up her Norfolk terrier Eleanor Rigby as an $8.99 rump roast.

“It’s her nickname around the vet’s office because she’s a little bit overweight,” Sylvia said.

Slaughter added that she will be hosting more fun events for her clients in the future, including a meet-and-greet with Santa Claus in December.
