A Dartmouth police officer has been ordered to stay away from his girlfriend after she accused him of physical abuse and threats, according to court documents.

A one-year restraining order was taken out against 25-year-old Officer Joshua Luis of New Bedford on December 19 by his unidentified girlfriend. Luis’ girlfriend alleges that there have been 10 separate incidents of abuse in Dartmouth, New Bedford, and Falmouth since December 2015, according to an affidavit.

In one statement, Luis’ girlfriend alleges that Luis had stopped by her residence while he was on duty and threatened to shoot her with a Taser after fighting with her. Describing another incident, the girlfriend alleges that Luis threw her around and choked her, then drew his gun and threatened to shoot both her and himself if she attempted to leave him.

Luis filed for a restraining order against his girlfriend, also on December 19, but was ultimately denied one. According to an affidavit that Luis gave, his girlfriend allegedly struck him multiple times, squeezed his throat, and used a kitchen knife to leave a mark on her own wrist on December 12.

Under the restraining order, Luis is required to stay away from his girlfriend’s workplaces in Fairhaven and Dartmouth, is barred from visiting her residence in Dartmouth, and he must not abuse her, contact her, nor go within 25 yards of her. The order is effective until December 18, 2017.

Dartmouth Police Chief Robert Szala did not name the officer involved, but confirmed that an officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation or any other actions by the court, which he said is standard protocol.

A court document identifies Luis as an employee of the Dartmouth Police Department. He was sworn in as a Dartmouth police officer in August 2015.

Luis did not respond to multiple phone calls for comment.

Two months ago, Luis received attention via social media after a young woman of color applauded his professionalism and dedication to service, despite nationwide tragedies surrounding racial tension. The woman, Ana Araujo, said she had been pulled over and let off with a verbal warning.
