Planning Board approves moratorium on recreational marijuana industry

Feb 28, 2017

The Planning Board voted to approve an 18-month moratorium on the recreational marijuana industry on February 27.

"We don't know when the final laws of the state are going to come down," said board member Lorri-Ann Miller. She explained that once the laws are clear, the town can create appropriate zoning for such businesses.

"You cannot zone it out of town. You have to allow it," said Miller. The state legalized recreational marijuana during November elections.

The zoning article to put a moratorium on recreational marijuana will next go to Town Meeting in June for approval.

Miller said the temporary moratorium is not unusual. Municipalities throughout the state have voted in 12- to 18-month delays, she said.
