Dartmouth projects included in MassDOT's five-year investment plan

Construction in Dartmouth might not be going away, but it could leave several major roadways safer with funding from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s capital investment plan.

The state agency is tasked with developing a five-year capital investment plan for the years 2018-2022. The agency’s goal is to identify and fund long-term improvements to the transportation system. With $17.4 billion allotted to projects state-wide, that number includes several projects in Dartmouth.

For Dartmouth, major highlights include funding for several modernization projects. One item adds an additional $2.9 million for the ongoing Padanaram causeway reconstruction project, bringing the total project funding up to $9.2 million. The project includes roadway, drainage, structural, and lighting improvements to the causeway, and updates to Gulf Road from the eastern edge of Apponagansett Park to the bridge, and to 400 feet of Smith Neck Road.

Also on the list is $4.4 million for the relocation of the Tucker Road/Route 6 intersection. The plan is to reroute Tucker Road through the North Dartmouth Library, connecting it to a newly created four-way signalized intersection with Route 6 and Hathaway Road.

According to MassDOT’s project database, the new intersection would be accommodating for bicyclists and pedestrians. The existing North Dartmouth Library would be demolished to make room for the roadway. Plans are already underway to build a new library on Cross Road.

A project to add a traffic signal to the Chase Road and Old Westport Road intersection also gains $961,361 in funding through the five-year plan. In addition to a traffic signal, new sidewalks and bicycle-friendly shoulders would be added, according to MassDOT.

Other items include an $11.4 million project to repave Interstate 195 in Dartmouth and New Bedford, and an $8.6 million project to replace guide and traffic signs on Interstates 195 and 495 from Dartmouth to Raynham.
