Michael J. Sweeney, 68
Michael J. Sweeney, 68, of Dartmouth, died on August 15, 2017 at Rhode Island Hospital following a brief illness. He was the widower of Linda L. (Marshall) Sweeney and son of the late John J. Sweeney, Sr. and Kathryn R. (Chaput) Sweeney.
Born and raised in New Bedford, Mr. Sweeney resided in Dartmouth for 32 years and was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart Of Jesus Church. He retired from the Town of Dartmouth Department of Public Works.
Mr. Sweeney was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, attaining the rank of Specialist, 5th Class. His many decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, three Overseas Service Bars and Expert Marksmanship Badge with M-14 and M-16 Qualification Bars.
He enjoyed driving his Mustang and visiting Fort Taber, but his greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
His family includes three sons, Shawn Sweeney and his wife Catherine of Tiverton, RI, Michael Sweeney of Fall River, and Patrick Sweeney and his wife Jessica of Dartmouth; four grandsons, Christian, Ryan, Daniel and Caleb Sweeney; one brother, John J. Sweeney, Jr. and his wife, Susan of Tiverton, RI; one sister, Patricia Young and her husband Kenneth of Florida; his mother-in-law, Adeline Roderick of Dartmouth; sisters-in-law Christine Patnode and her companion, Andy Couto and Jeanne Faria, all of Dartmouth; brother-in-law Donald Faria and his wife, Joyce of East Otis, MA ; several cousins including James Sweeney and his wife Linda of New Bedford and several nieces and nephews. He was the son-in-law of the late Henry Roderick and brother-in-law of the late Mario Faria.
He was interred with military honors at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
