The Dartmouth Sister City Committee has named the winners of a contest in advance of the Plymouth 400 celebration.

The essay and art contest, announced last spring, invited Dartmouth students to write essays commemorating the Pilgrims’ 400th anniversary of arriving in Plymouth.

Fifth grader Roger Jackman won in the middle/elementary school category.

At the high school level, the first place winner from Bishop Stang High School is Ebelechiyem Okafor. From Dartmouth High, Kailey Humason came in second place and Madison Pedro came in third place. Lily Canario made a pen and ink drawing.

The essay topic involved assuming the role of a family who recently emigrated from England, and involved writing a letter to a family member or friend back home about life in America.

The contest was one of two education programs sponsored by the committee. The other one was a video project that involved filming a video introducing students in Dartmouth, Devon, UK to historic buildings in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Students in Dartmouth High’s video class interviewed local historians, and photography students took photographs of structures in the Russells Mills area.

Student winners were presented with gift certificates at their schools recently.
