William "Wally" Garcia, 58

Detective William "Wally" Garcia, 58, of Dartmouth, died on November 10, 2017. He was the husband of Valerie (Gagnon) Garcia.

Born in New York City, the son of Francisco Garcia of Puerto Rico and the late Margarita (Mateo) Garcia, he was a graduate of New Bedford High School , the New Bedford Police Academy and served in the Army National Guard.

Wally was a police officer with the Dartmouth Police Department for 32 years. He held the rank of Patrolman, Sergeant and most recently Detective. Wally was a member of the Dartmouth Police Department Honor Guard, Executive Board Member of the Dartmouth Police Brotherhood, board member of the Dartmouth Police Athletic League and a member of the Massachusetts Police Association.

An avid bowler, Wally would bowl Monday evenings in a co-ed league at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford.

In addition to his wife and father, Wally is survived by two sons, William Garcia Jr of Dartmouth and Juan Garcia of New Bedford; a step daughter, Haley Cambra; a step son, Bryan Travis; four brothers, Edwin Garcia of New Bedford, Luis Garcia of New Bedford, Ricardo Garcia of New Jersey and Melvin Garcia of Puerto Rico; two grandchildren, Trudii Skye Garcia and Talan Travis, and many nieces and nephews.

Wally was also the brother of the late Judy Torres.

His funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth, with a law enforcement walk-through at 5 p.m.

Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Dartmouth Police Athletic League, 249 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02748.
