Holiday recycling dates and reminders

Dec 27, 2017

The Dartmouth Department of Public Works has announced its schedule of holiday-related disposal dates and tips for holiday waste disposal and recycling.

Christmas tree pick-ups will be during the weeks of January 2 and 8. During those weeks, customers of the town's SMART program can place their real Christmas trees on the curb by 7 a.m. on customers’ regular trash and recycling collection day and trees will be disposed of.

Trees will be collected by a separate truck, and the schedule is subject to change due to unforeseen weather conditions.

Only trees will be collected. No ornaments, stands, holiday lights, or tinsel will be collected. Trees must not be bagged.

Dartmouth residents can also drop Christmas trees off at the Department of Public Works Water Pollution Facility’s brush area, located at 759 Russells Mills Road. Trees must be clear of ornaments, stands, lights, tinsel, and bags.

Drop-off hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. A transfer station sticker is required to drop trees off at the facility.

Other holiday-related items can be dropped off for recycling at the Dartmouth Transfer Station, 976 Russells Mills Road, for recycling. Items collected include styrofoam blocks, boxes, TVs and computer monitors ($10 each), and clothing. There are separate areas for each of these items. A transfer station permit is required.

The Department of Public Works is also issuing reminders and tips for holiday recycling.

Wrapping paper (without bows, ribbons, or cellophane), empty cardboard and paper boxes, catalogs, paper tubes, lottery tickets, and paper greeting cards (except photo cards) can all be placed in black-lid carts.

Christmas lights, plastic bags, food or liquid, clothing, styrofoam blocks, styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, or air pillows are not permitted in recycling carts.

Empty bottles, cans, jugs, jars, and clean pie tins are permitted in gray-lid carts.

There will be no curbside collection on January 1. Collection will be delayed by one day.
