Dighton man to face charges after allegedly leaving puppy in cold car

A Dighton man is facing charges after allegedly leaving his puppy in his car for close to an hour.

According to Dartmouth police, officers responded to the Dartmouth Mall on December 30 at 5:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a puppy left unattended in a car in the mall parking lot.

The caller told officers at the scene the puppy had been left unattended in the vehicle for at least 20 minutes, but officers determined with further investigation the puppy was allegedly in the car for close to an hour.

An officer described the puppy as being "shivering and rolled up in a ball" on the seat.

Dartmouth Animal Control seized the puppy and it was transported to a local veterinary hospital for an evaluation.

The owner is being charged with cruelty to animals. His name is not being released until his arraignment, police said in a press release.

The average temperature on December 30 was 14 degrees with a high of 20 and a low of 7, according to the National Weather Service.
