Organization builds greenhouse, public viewing scheduled

Mar 12, 2018

Helfand Farm Community Garden will be having a grand opening for its new greenhouse on March 17.

Starting at 10 a.m. visitors will be able to meet the volunteers behind the 24 foot by 48 foot greenhouse. The project is intended to help grow food for area soup kitchens to use and grow plants for the organizations yearly plant sale fundraiser. People are also encouraged to bring a seed to exchange with someone else during the group’s seed swap. The event goes until 1 p.m.

The greenhouse will supplement the groups Soup Kitchen Garden, which provided over 600 pounds of vegetables for soup kitchens in Fall River and New Bedford in 2017. People will also have the opportunity to volunteer, allowing them to give back to the community. Those interested in volunteering need to contact the group via email at www.helfandgarden.com.

Funds for the garden project came from fundraising events by the organization and a $2,500 grant from United Way of Greater New Bedford’s Mini Grants program.
