Dartmouth boys lacrosse is young but ready to play

New jerseys and team traditions are motivating the Dartmouth High boys lacrosse team this season.

This year’s team is looking for a fresh start. With several new players coming in, returning players want to strengthen team dynamics and begin the season off right. Teammates are aided by a reinvented look with brand new digs in the form of new jerseys.

“We’ve been waiting for these jerseys for like two years,” said Kyle Sullivan. “During the offseason when coach finally told us they came in, it gave us motivation — like new season, new team, new jerseys— it’s kind of like a good fresh start for us to make a name for our own team.”

The new gear is better syncing teammates into what feels like a big family, noted player Will Cote. With more interaction both on and off the field, Cote said it’s all about creating a trusting relationship between teammates new and familiar.

“Make them feel comfortable, that’s probably the biggest thing— make them feel like they’re part of the team,” Cote said.

Keeping with tradition, Sullivan said the group usually gets together for a spaghetti dinner to relax before heading into a game. Some take trips to Cumberland Farms for pre-game snacks. A travel playlist to build hype for road games is also in the works.

Even though the team’s season opener against league rival New Bedford was postponed due to weather, the boys are remaining focused for the next game against Plymouth North High School.

Rather than taking the day off, the boys headed to the Dartmouth Middle School gym where teammates practiced drills, including swapping defensive and offensive positions to get used to both.

“We’re going to just take everything we’ve worked on in the past two weeks and just bring it on Thursday,” Sullivan said.

The Indians will play Plymouth North on April 5 at 4 p.m. for what will now be its season opener. The away game will be at Plymouth North High School located at 41 Obery Street. The New Bedford game was postponed to April 12.
