May 1, 2018

At its April 30 meeting, School Committee members learned about all of the ways the Dartmouth High athletic department is excelling.

During a short presentation, athletic director Jeffrey Caron broke down the numbers and highlighted how well teams are doing.

About half of the high school student population are athletes, with 567 participating in the program. Of those students, 140 play three sports a year. Four of the top 10 students are athletes along with nine of the top 20.

Eight of its nine fall sports teams made it to state tournaments and five of six teams in the winter. Three league championships were brought home in the past year - the boys cross country team, and the goys and girls indoor track teams.

Thirteen of the 15 teams at the school qualified for state tournament play. The department has seen six tournament victories and three south sectional semifinalists.

Also there have been 40-plus league all-stars, four eastern Massachusetts all-stars and one MIAA coach of the year, who was also the first unified coach to win the award.

Caron also highlighted student athletes service work, like the softball team’s Earth day cleanup and the boys basketball substance abuse awareness month event, among others.

Regarding coaches, 88 percent of the coaching staff is also employed at the high school.

Caron said keep in mind some of these numbers will change again as spring sports are still ongoing.
