Dartmouth could have a say in a proposed offshore wind farm located near Martha’s Vineyard, although exactly what officials have to say is unclear.

As part of the federal permitting process for a proposed wind farm off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, the United States Department of the Interior invited coastal communities, organizations, and historical groups to participate in the process as consulting parties.

The project involves building up to an 800 megawatt wind farm off of the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, which could include a total of 106 wind turbine generators.

Select Board Chair Shawn McDonald said it is unclear just how much impact the project could bring visually, as it is unknown if the farm would affect views from Dartmouth’s shores.

However, he and Select Board member John Haran noted there are concerns the project raises with the region’s commercial fishermen.

“I am concerned about commercial fisheries and any interruption in their work processes,” McDonald said.

The Select Board did not decide on how to move forward with the opportunity at its June 25 meeting. Instead, the board plans to wait until new town administrator Shawn MacInnes begins, and appoint someone to work with the agency by the end of the summer.
