Police stop man from falling victim to scam

Dartmouth police are urging the public to be on alert for potential scams after an officer saved a man from making a costly mistake.

According to police, a woman concerned her father had fallen for a scam contacted police on July 5. Officer Justin Amaral met with the man, and learned he had purchased 27 $1,000 Walmart gift cards he intended to send to a scammer.

The man had been contacted earlier by the Attorney General of National Security, and told he owed $27,000 he was required to pay via gift cards.

On its Facebook page, the department warns those who really do owe money to the government will not be contacted via telephone and will not be required to pay in the form of gift cards.
