One person was killed and one person was injured in two separate crashes on Interstate 195 on July 20.

According to Dartmouth Fire District No. 3 Chief Richard Arruda, fire crews first responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 195 eastbound at the Highland Avenue Bridge on the Dartmouth/Westport town line at 2:14 p.m.

The vehicle was traveling east on Interstate 195 when it left the roadway, traveled up an embankment, and crashed into the bridge. The occupant of the vehicle was trapped inside.

Crews extricated the driver from the vehicle by 2:42 p.m. Medflight was called, and landed on the highway at 2:52 p.m., necessitating a shutdown of the highway for about 10 minutes.

The driver was transported via ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, the driver, identified as Richard Carroll of New Canaan, Conn., was pronounced dead a short time later.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police.

Arruda said that the department did great work today and extricated the driver very quickly.

The highway was reported to be reopened at 3:02 p.m., but one eastbound lane was closed for some time as crews removed the pickup truck.

As crews left the scene of the first accident, a car headed eastbound on Interstate I-195 near Reed Road flipped over the guard rail at 3:12 p.m. and landed blocking two lanes of traffic.

The driver was extricated from the car by 3:17 p.m. and transported to the hospital for minor injuries. The car's four passengers refused treatment.

The cause of this accident is under investigation by the Dartmouth Police Department.
