As Dartmouth police officer Amanda Tavares sat under a dunk tank filled with cool water, 7-year-old Chase Amaral tried to hit his mark: the big red lever. Although he missed, he rushed up to press the button himself, drenching Tavares.

It was all part of the Concert on the Green, an annual community event put on by the Dartmouth Police Relief Association. It included musical acts, a car show, raffles and prizes, and - of course - Dunk-A-Cop.

Tavares has volunteered for the role for several years, drawn to the fun of it. She was joined by officer Justin Medeiros.

“It’s so much fun and it’s great interacting with the community,” Medeiros said.

A community event is exactly what the night was all about, explained Joe Vieira, who helped run the event. It began 17 years ago as a replacement of a policeman’s ball to include more of the community, especially families.

“In the first couple years we just had the band, then we started to expand out,” Vieira said.

Now, it features a host of events, including a classic car show. The show drew dozens of car enthusiasts, like Brad Kirby, who showcased his 1932 Ford. He spent about six years working on the car, replacing its motor and a host of other features.

At the other end of the spectrum was UMass Dartmouth student Buddy Huntington, who brought his still-in-the-works 1967 Mercury Cougar to the show. He bought it earlier in the year, and only had a chance to replace the engine before he had to drive it all the way to Dartmouth from Wisconsin for classes.

The main event was Garth Brooks tribute band Kevin White -- who himself had performed at one of the earliest Concerts on the Green. A new clam and Del’s lemonade stand was also added this year.

Although Concert on the Green is not a big moneymaker, Vieira said the most important thing is kids and families are out having fun. It also allows the relief association, which funds certain benefits for Dartmouth police officers, to thank community members who donate -- each person who donated received free tickets.
