Ellen M. (Sullivan) Cornell, 95, of Dartmouth passed away Thursday, March 12, 2020 at New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home.  She was the wife of the late Pardon W. Cornell.

Born and raised in Fall River, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Quigley) Sullivan, she resided in Dartmouth for most of her life.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in South Dartmouth.

Ellen was a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and earned a master’s degree from Catholic University.

She was formerly employed as an Elementary Art Teacher for the Dartmouth Public Schools until her retirement in 1987. Throughout her career and especially during retirement Ellen enjoyed visiting art exhibits and creating her own works in watercolor.

Additionally, she was an avid reader which led to her position as library trustee in Dartmouth for many years. She enjoyed swimming at the local YMCA and in the summers spent many afternoons at Round Hill Beach.  

Survivors include three sons, Pardon Cornell and his wife Katherine of New Bedford, Christopher Cornell and his wife JoAnn of Dartmouth, and Michael Cornell and his wife Angela of Dartmouth; a daughter, MaryAnn and her husband Kenneth, of Dartmouth; six grandchildren, Nicholas Lamarre and his wife Erin, Elizabeth Lamarre, Peter Cornell, Victoria Cornell, Olivia Cornell and Hank Cornell; and one great-grandchild, Eleanor Lamarre.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 16, 2020 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Dartmouth Street, South Dartmouth. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
