After a week’s delay, high school hockey came back to Dartmouth — as the Dartmouth and Bishop Stang high school hockey teams restarted their season following a postponement of games in mid-January due to the Covid surge.

Dartmouth High announced a week-long pause on Jan. 11, postponing matches until Jan. 19, while Bishop Stang postponed six hockey games from Jan. 8-16.

The men’s teams faced off for a season opener on Jan. 2 — in which Dartmouth shut out crosstown rivals Stang to win 2-0 — before the contests were put on hold.

Since coming back, Dartmouth High lost a Jan. 23 game to Falmouth 1-6 before going on to defeat the Old Rochester Regional/Fairhaven Bulldogs 7-1 on Jan. 25.

DHS junior J.C. Frates led the scoreboard with a hat trick in the third period of Monday’s game after Dartmouth’s John Gamache scored the first goal within the first minute of the match.

Josh Nelson brought the score to 2-0 at the end of the second period before the team hammered five more goals in during the third, with Cullen Larrabee and Kai Andrade scoring one each on top of Frates’ three.

The Bulldogs’ Chris Gauvin scored the lone goal for his team in the third period.

Bishop Stang’s women’s hockey team — a co-op of regional high schools including players from Dartmouth — started the season with a bang on Dec. 30 with a 2-1 win over Bishop Feehan.

They lost two other games before the pause, a 4-3 nail-biter to Bishop Fenwick on Jan. 2 and a 1-3 match to Matignon High School on Jan. 6, and another two upon their return, 2-6 to Austin Prep on Jan. 20 and 1-5 to St. Mary’s High School on Jan. 23.

Meanwhile Bishop Stang’s men’s hockey team is also off to a rocky restart, losing 4-1 to Bishop Feehan High School before the Covid pause, then restarting the season with a 4-0 loss to Archbishop Williams High School on Jan. 20 and a 3-0 loss to Hingham High School on Jan. 23.
