Event has passed
Sign up to join the Friends of the Dartmouth Libraries on Thursday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. as Anne Barrett, noted public speaker and storyteller, traces baseball's social, historical, and professional evolution from 19th century "townball" to the formation of the Major Leagues and the sport’s transformation into the nation’s favorite pastime.
Baseball (in various forms) has been around for hundreds of years: rousing games of stoolball at Plimoth Plantation, ball games played to pass the time during the Civil War, and the bat-and-ball game that we now know and love. The game bred gambling scandals and rivalries so bitter that the 1904 World Series was cancelled. It also popularized Cracker Jacks, baseball cards, and Broadway songs. Anne Barrett’s presentation will be an opportunity to return to baseball’s roots and to review the game’s impact on our popular culture.
