The town has launched a website in an effort to engage the community, with information provided directly from town officials.

The site, engagedartmouth.org, provides residents with information on town issues and a chance to interact, said Development Director Cody Haddad.

“We’re trying to get more people engaged,’’ he said.

The new website, which was created by system analyst intern Alexandra Sherman, does not replace the current town website, which features a calendar of events, contact numbers for town officials and other information, he said.

Instead, the site offers a chance for the public to ask questions directly to town officials on a variety of ongoing projects. 

“We want it to be a place where dialogue can happen,’’ Haddad said.

He hopes the site will serve as a clearinghouse for accurate information on town issues, rather than rumor and social media speculation, he said. 

The site includes sections on ongoing projects, such as a master plan update, and Bliss Corner Department of Environmental Protection cleanup issue. Participants are also encouraged to submit questions on town matters, such as whether the town is changing voting precincts. (Answer: They are.)

First-time users must sign in and register to interact, although the site is open to everyone to read.

Comments will be monitored for inappropriate or irrelevant content, he said. But otherwise, open dialogue is encouraged, he said. “We’re going to cover everything, the positive and the negative,’’ he said.

Surveys will be posted to gauge community perspectives, Sherman said. “This is a chance to ask questions,’’ she said. “We’re not just posting things that look good for us.’’

Bang the Table, a webmaster committed to community engagement, hosts the site. 

“We’re really excited about the whole thing,’’ Haddad said.
