School Committee sets rules for Tuesday’s public forum on ‘Indian’
At a March 21 meeting, the Dartmouth School Committee detailed the rules for participation in a public forum on the Dartmouth Indian logo that will take place on Tuesday, March 22.
The board announced that two speakers — Sean Carney and a representative from the New Bedford NAACP — would be starting the discussion with 10 minute long “for” and “against” statements.
After the initial speakers, anyone will be allowed to line up behind one of two podiums to speak for up to two minutes on the subject of the logo.
Committee member John Nunes advocated for restricting the right to speak at the forum to just Dartmouth residents.
“This is a Dartmouth issue,” he said. “We don’t need someone coming down from Boston or East Overshoe telling us what we should be doing.”
However, Committee Chair Dr. Shannon Jenkins said she would not be in favor of such a restriction and Nunes declined to make a motion to enact one.
The committee did agree to scrap an earlier idea that would have designated one podium for “for” speakers and the other for “against.” Instead, speakers will be allowed to line up wherever they choose.
The public forum will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dartmouth High Auditorium. It is scheduled to end by 8 p.m.
