‘More than just a hall’: VFW Post celebrates 75 years of service to area veterans
A Cross Road staple just reached its diamond jubilee.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Dartmouth VFW Post 9059 and to commemorate the occasion, veterans, and state and local officials filled the hall to enjoy a banquet and give praise to the post’s dedication to those who served.
“While so many things have changed, some things remain the same — comradeship,” said Massachusetts VFW Department Commander Doug Wood. “The VFW post is a very important part of every returning GI's life.”
The post located at 144 Cross Road was first chartered in 1947 after being sold to the VFW for one dollar, Post Commander Joseph Toomey said. At the time, he said the building “likely needed some maintenance.”
“They certainly weren’t just giving buildings away because they were rich,” he said with a laugh. “It made sense money-wise [for the town].”
Still, Toomey said that purchase 75 years ago was well worth that dollar.
Since then, the building has become a haven for area veterans looking to connect and swap stories with one another and civilians who take a seat at the bar adjacent to the hall.
“This place is more than just a hall,” State Rep. Chris Markey. “The idea that Dartmouth has this VFW post — we need to keep that going.”
Wood echoed those sentiments.
“This momentous occasion should not stand for just the 75 years behind it — it should stand for the next 75 years as well,” he said.
Moving forward, Toomey said the post will continue to host gatherings such as its annual commander’s cookout, chicken barbecue, and networking events.
He also encouraged more civilians to stop by any day at the bar to learn from the veterans or to join the VFW Auxiliary.
“If you like what you see and do here, tell your friends,” Toomey said. “We love to have your support.”
