Reaching for the stars: Dartmouth music continues to go undefeated
Dartmouth High School marching band and color guard took home another win to put toward their undefeated season on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Under the black sky and bright moon, members dressed in purple galaxy patterns took to Memorial Stadium field, receiving a score of 93.8 and first place in their group. Blackstone Millville Regional High School took second with a score of 89.9.
Performing the whole show from start to finish for the first time, Music Director Ian Flint said the whole evening was “really exciting for us.”
The group’s performance has a celestial theme focused on the moon and the stars.
“The whole idea is just us as part of the greater universe and all the members are dressed like they’re part of the universe,” Flint said. “They are not people in space, but they are part of the celestial universe.”
While some classical pieces, like “Clair de Lune,” found their way on the list, Flint said the production is largely original composition.
“It was a really good performance for us,” he said. “We’ve got a couple weeks left, so at this time of year it's about trying to get perfection.”
In less than two weeks, the band and guard will be headed to nationals, competing against over 20 teams in their group.
Flint said he has “a great group of kids and they’re super dedicated. It takes a student that really wants to work hard to be a part of this program.”
Junior Aerro Gove, who conducted the performance, said, “I personally think that’s the best show we’ve had this season, so it’s really nice to see it all get put together for the whole entire community.”
She added, “We’ve worked tirelessly and we’re really excited to see where the show goes.”
Seniors Savannah Riley and Aviyah Conward Johnson, reflecting on their last ever home performance, said it felt “very surreal.”
The two said it really began to sink in when they received a visit from past seniors. Now, they hope to take as many photos as possible before the end of the season and have fun.
All three said they joined the group “definitely for the community”
Gove said, “We have days where we love each other and days where we hate each other, but at the end, we all come together and really make it one great production.”
