2016 Recapped: the year in photos

As 2016 comes to a close, Dartmouth Week staffers took the time to reflect on our favorite moments of the year, captured from the lens of a camera. Here's our top six picks for the most photogenic moments of 2016.

Three-year-old Isabella Ferreira was full of smiles and laughter at the last ever Dartmouth Blowout fundraiser on August 13. The annual summer party, which featured food, drinks, and plenty of music, raised money for her family after the sudden passing of her father Ryan Ferreira, a firefighter in Dartmouth and Walpole. It was also the final Blowout Dartmouth will ever see, as event organizers decided it would be the last. BY DOUGLAS MCCULLOCH

The Padanaram Causeway was shut down on August 1 for a rehabilitation project, severing a direct link between Padanaram and Gulf Road. With detours in place in the meantime, there is a little bit of good news: the project will continue through the winter. A'mya Acevedo, 5, was one of 60 kids who enjoyed the Dartmouth Knights of Columbus's annual "Get Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs" fishing derby on August 6 at Mello's Pond. The 27-year tradition attracts some of Dartmouth's youngest fishing fans between the ages of 6-16. BY ANGIE HILSMAN

The Dartmouth High football team did not gain its third consecutive Super Bowl title,but had a 16-game winning streak. Here, starting quarterback Cole Jacobsen outruns a Barnstable player during the team’s October 22 Old Colony League-winning game –Dartmouth’s first since 2008. Jacobsen ended his two-year career as the Indians starting quarterback and will be heading to Southern New Hampshire University next fall to play lacrosse and study business. BY DOUGLAS MCCULLOCH

What better way to ring in spring than a superhero dress-up day? The DeMello and Cushman Schools’ second annual Superhero Carnival on May 21 attracted hundreds of kids, including Joey Gonsalves, 15, who dressed up as Superman. The event raised money for the schools’ PTO. BY LAUREN ZAKNOUN

Ariane Santos, Kaelyn Braz, and Maeve Firth march down Elm Street in the first ever Padanaram Halloween Parade on October 31. Hosted by the Padanaram Business Association, the new attraction featured over 100 costumed kids and adults – and plenty of candy. BY DOUGLAS MCCULLOCH

Or are you excited for more snow? Here's a winter scene from one of the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust's many nature walks on February 9. The hike was held on Super Bowl Sunday at Slocum's River Reserve, giving the over 150 people who attended a fun way to burn off a few calories before munching on snacks as the Broncos beat the Panthers 24-10.
