Support local families.
The Blowout—a Dartmouth tradition since 1977—will be held on August 13, noon to 10 p.m. at the Horseneck Holy Ghost Grounds on Allen Neck Road. Proceeds from the event will support either the family of District No. 1 firefighter Ryan Ferriera, 31, who passed unexpectedly earlier this year, or 22-year-old DJ Bishop, whose tragic accident in May led to paralyzation and medical expenses.
Tickets—$35 for all-you-can-eat and live music—are available at CV Liquors (550 Russells Mills Road), at the Portuguese American Club (26 Columbus Street), and at the Westport Social Club (904 Main Road, Westport). For more information, visit facebook.com/dartmouthblowout.
Adopt a duck.
Mass Audubon’s Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is celebrating its 13th annual Duck Derby, a rubber duck race at Allens Pond. Ducks are on sale—adopt your ducks online at massaudubon.org or by phone, (508) 636-2437—through 2 p.m. on August 13, and the race will start at 2:15 p.m. The adopted ducks will “paddle” on the incoming tide from Buzzards Bay into Allens Pond. The first yellow rubber duckie to cross the finish line wins the grand prize—dinner for two anywhere in the world, which includes airfare and two nights of lodging. See Sunday's activities for info on the post-race festivities.
Taste a New England tradition.
The Friends of Smith Neck Meeting are hosting an old fashioned New England Clambake at 1:30 p.m. The 30-year tradition starts with homemade quahog chowder and brown bread, but the bake also includes stuffing, fish, corn, sausage, clams, potatoes, and watermelon. Tickets are $47 for adults, and $23 for children under 12. For reservations call Anne Lopoulos at 508-994-5816. The event is handicapped accessible. Smith Neck Friends Meeting is located at 594 Smith Neck Road.
Sunday, August 14
Sing 'happy birthday.'
Salvador's Ice Cream owners—Len and Beth Gauvin—are throwing an 80th birthday party for the historical milk can on Smith Neck Road. Enjoy games, face painting, and raffles, and maybe even speak to history buffs from the Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society and George Salvador, son of original owner Augustine Salvador. For more information, visit Salvador's on Facebook.
Eat barbecue at the Duck Derby Festival.
Post-derby festivities will take place on Sunday, August 14, 11-2 p.m. on the grounds near the field station at the sanctuary—1280 Horseneck Road in Westport, where Dartmouth meets Westport along Buzzards Bay. The event will include a $5 barbecue lunch, games and crafts for kids, educational exhibits, live music, a video replay of the race, a silent auction, and live plant auction. This event is free and open to the public.
All derby proceeds will be used to support programs at Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary. For complete details about the Duck Derby, visit massaudubon.org or call 508-636-2437.
