African Drum and Dance classes at Friends Academy

Jul 16, 2019

The Encompass Community at Friends Academy, 1088 Tucker Road in North Dartmouth, will be hosting monthly African Drum and Dance classes for families starting on September 18.

Tara Murphy of the Cape Cod African Drum and Dance troupe will be leading the lively sessions. They are open to the public and will run on the third Wednesday of each month, from September through February.

Participants will learn both hand-drumming techniques and traditional African dance steps.

The classes are appropriate for all levels of dance experience. Children are invited to attend with their parents. Please wear comfortable clothing and come dressed to move. Drums will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Tara Murphy has studied traditional dance and drumming through Yale University at the University of Legon in Ghana, West Africa.

Since returning to the U.S., for the past 20 years, she has studied closely with many African and Afro-Caribbean artists in  honor to share the inspiration of these ancient traditions.

The cost for the classes is $25 per family with advance registration, or $15 per person drop-in.
