Albert F. Abelha, 84

Albert F. Abelha, 84, of New Bedford passed away on Nov. 7 at Charlton Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Delores A. (DaCosta) Abelha.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Francisco F. and Rose (Rocha) Abelha, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. Abelha was formerly employed as a school teacher at the Joseph DeMello School in Dartmouth for almost 40 years until his retirement. He had also worked from CETA and the City of New Bedford Summer Youth Program, helping disadvantaged youth with job training and summer employment.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.

He loved spending time with his wife, children, and family. He enjoyed gardening, the ocean, the outdoors, and computers. An avid reader, he never missed an opportunity to discuss politics or philosophy.

Survivors include his wife; eight children, Donna Spoor of Dartmouth, Deborah Abelha of Mattapoisett, Albert Abelha, Jr. of New Bedford, Deirdre Yapchanyk of Long Valley, NJ, Adam Abelha of Fairhaven, Dorena Costa of Rochester, Aaron Abelha of Hanson; and Andrien Abelha of New Bedford; his longtime best friend, George Soares; and 12 grandchildren.

His funeral was held on Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his funeral mass at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. For the guestbook, visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
