Americo A. “Mac” Matias, 75

Americo A. “Mac” Matias, 75, of So. Dartmouth, died Thursday, December 27, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was the husband of Nancy A. (Mello) Matias with whom he shared 50 years of marriage and son of the late Francisco and Maria (Morreira) Matias.

Born in Faial, Azores, he immigrated with his family to New Bedford in 1947 and resided in Dartmouth for 40 years.

Mr. Matias was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and attained the rank of Lance Corporal. His decorations include the Good Conduct Medal and Rifle Marksman Badge.

He was employed as head custodian with the Dartmouth Public Schools until his retirement.

He was a member of the New Bedford Rifle Range and served as Range Supervisor. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, tinkering and building birdhouses.

His family includes his wife; his son, Michael J. Matias and his wife, Lisa of Fairhaven; his grandson, Nathan J. Matias and his nephew and Godson, Ryan Patnaude.

He was the brother of the late Cidalia Patnaude.

Visiting hours are omitted. His funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth, MA at 10:00 A.M. Interment is private.
