Antonio A. Luizinho, Jr., 90, of Dartmouth, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Izabel Botelho (Silva) Luizinho with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.

Born in New Bedford on December 17, 1926, he was a son of the late Antonio A. Luizinho, Sr. and Maria (Afonso) Luizinho. At the age of three, Antonio traveled with his parents to the island of Madeira and lived there until the age of 17. He came back to the United States in 1943 and has resided in Dartmouth since 1958.

Mr. Luizinho served in the United States Army during World War II and was the recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He had worked in local New Bedford textile mills, ran the bottling machine at Gulf Hill Dairy, and retired in 1981 from the New Bedford House of Corrections as a correctional officer. He was part owner of Atlantic Pearl, Ltd.

Antonio served as a committee member and now honorary member of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, a member of Club Sport Madeirense and a board member of Sharing a Blessing Soup Kitchen. He earned a black belt in karate, enjoyed gardening and was known for his homemade wine.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Isabel Medeiros and her husband Joseph of Dartmouth; a son, Antonio “Tony” Luizinho, III of Berkley; two grandchildren, Stephen J. Medeiros and his wife Susan of Dartmouth and Melissa M. Desrosiers and her husband Matthew of New Bedford; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Medeiros, Nathan Medeiros and Avery Theresa Desrosiers; several nieces and nephews including his nieces from Madeira, Fernanda Luizinho Frade, Gracinha Luizinho and Inocencia Luizinho and many close family members from the island of Madeira.

He was the brother of the late Maria and Jose Luizinho.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017, 4-7 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Road in Dartmouth.

His funeral will be held on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 9 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
