Dartmouth High School Principal Ross Thibault announced this week that students taking the AP exams this spring will be able to complete them at home, according to new College Board guidelines.

On March 25, Governor Charlie Baker announced that all schools in Massachusetts will remain closed until May 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In two video announcements to Dartmouth parents, Principal Thibault said that Advanced Placement exams will be limited to 45 minutes and taken at home, and that more enrichment lessons will be made available on the public schools’ online portal at sites.google.com/dartmouthschools.org/dps-extended-learning/.

The College Board will offer students a choice of two different dates per AP exam, and will focus on content that most teachers would have covered by the first week of March. The board is also providing free resources available to students up until the exams.

For AP courses that culminate in portfolio submissions, the deadline has been extended to May 26.

Thibault noted that extended learning lessons and resources are not meant to replicate school, but are “intended to provide students an opportunity to continue their learning around content standards during the school closure.”

He announced that in order to support this work, teachers will hold at least two virtual office hours per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

The high school’s counselling department will also be holding virtual office hours from 8 to 11 a.m. daily.

“You can reach out to our counselors any time, but during that window of time they are exclusively responding to student emails, holding virtual zoom conferences if necessary, and supporting whatever needs our students might have,” Thibault said in the video.
