Arrest made in hit-and-run crash that injured teen pedestrian

A New Bedford woman is under arrest, accused of a hit-and-run crash on Dartmouth Street that sent a 14-year-old pedestrian to the hospital with serious injuries on January 5.

According to police, the crash happened at approximately 5:10 p.m. in the area of 597 Dartmouth Street. Once on scene, the 14-year-old was discovered with serious injuries and was transported via helicopter to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The teen is listed in stable condition as of Friday morning, police said.

The person that hit the teen fled the scene, police said. She was identified as 34-year-old Jessica Skaggs of Margin Street in New Bedford after she turned herself in 30 minutes after the crash. She was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in bodily injury and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

According to police a 2004 Nissan Sentra Skaggs was allegedly driving at the time of the crash was recovered in a parking lot a short distance away from the crash scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Dartmouth Police and the Massachusetts State Police.
