Big show of small art at Cultural Center’s Holiday Exhibit

Dec 8, 2018

The Dartmouth Cultural Center was home to a big exhibit of small art this past weekend by the South Coast Artists for the groups’ first-ever Holiday Exhibit.

The exhibit, which ran from Dec. 7 to 9, only included items no larger than 14 by 14 inches, and covered a wide variety of mediums and subject matters. Watercolors of rabbits, collages of trees, abstract images, and figurative sculptures were all represented by the 43 artists showing a total of 130 works at the event.

At the Dec. 7 opening, New Bedford Symphony Orchestra musicians EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and Luke Fatora provided a soundtrack while guests browsed the work.

Michèle Bailey, who has been a member of the South Coast Artists since 2012, had three works in the show about her love of the night.

She often looks to a quote by the poet Sarah Williams for inspiration: “I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.”

Bailey said she values the opportunity to learn from other artists through the group.

David Formanek, a sculptor who works in resin, displayed small sculptures of seated figures.

Recently, he has been thinking about a German word that roughly translates to “the feeling of solitude when you’re alone in the woods.” His figures are often sitting on a stump. Formanek also makes larger works, consisting of phrases hammered into sheets of metal.

Stephen Remick, a painter who trained at the Swain School, displayed three paintings of somewhat abstract winter landscapes. Two were composed around a snow-covered rooftop, reduced to a parallelogram.

“I find that the roof is a shelter, a safe place, coming home,” Remick said. He noticed that he often painted snow-covered rooftops, and has been exploring why.

The South Coast Artists group is best known for its summer open studio events which take place over two weekends in July and August. For more information about the artists and the group, go to www.southcoastartists.org.
