Bishop Stang girls basketball scores big at opener

Dec 16, 2015

The Bishop Stang girls basketball team kicked off their season with a high-scoring, well-paced first game against the Wareham Vikings, winning 56-31.

The Spartans boast a young roster of players this season. With 10 full time varsity players and three girls playing between JV and varsity, the team is striving to improve in each and every game and strengthen their chemistry, said Spartan head coach Eric LeVie, now in his 14th year of coaching.

“We’re pretty much starting over. It was good to have some success early and hope it translates in the conference,” LeVie said.

Led by co-captains Abby Means and Rebekah Patterson, both three-year varisty players, the team is already showing promise.

“[The game] is about being patient with the process...” LeVie added.

The Vikings got out to an early lead and scored 11 points out of senior guard Tieyanna Yancy, including seven in the first quarter.

Bishop Stang eventually pulled ahead for good at the end of the first quarter, though, led by senior guard Rebekah Patterson and freshman forward Rylie Carreau, who had 13 points apiece.

“Stang’s a well-coached man-to-man team. I thought this was more competitive than last year’s game with them,” said Wareham head coach David Brogioli.

Despite the loss, Wareham had a great turnout for the Dick Melloni Toy Drive, a yearly fundraiser in Wareham.

The Spartans’ next game will be home against Westport on Dec. 17 at 5 p.m.
