Boys track finishes first in league championship meet

The Dartmouth High boys track team took home a first place win in the Old Colony League Championship meet on January 24, narrowly beating out rival Bridgewater-Raynham by six points.

The 54-48 win closed out the regular season for a squad of 14 seniors, 29 juniors, 22 sophomores, and 35 freshmen. Contributions from both new and returning athletes propelled Dartmouth to a 4-1 record; the only loss suffered was to Bridgewater-Raynham.

“This is definitely the deepest team we’ve ever had,” said Head Coach Jeff Reed. “It’s been a great season. We have such a strong senior class and a lot of great leadership.”

Leading up to the OCL Championship, Reed knew it would be a tough and close-scoring meet. He gave his team time to rest — despite spending most of the regular season in training — to make sure everyone was ready for the challenge.

While Bridgewater-Raynham picked up more first-place event wins, Reed said the team consistently had enough top-four finishers to earn points.

Notable accomplishments for Dartmouth: Ben Paine's first place finish in the 600 meter run at 1:27.72; Greg Martin's first place finish in the one mile run at 4:53.78; Mac Lynch's 1:02.43 first place finish in the two mile run; and Colin McCabe's first place finish in the shot put with a distance of 51 feet, eight inches.

With the regular season out of the way, Reed is shifting view to the postseason. He plans to send 10 qualifying athletes to compete in the MSTCA Coaches Invitational on January 28.

“It’s going to be pretty tough,” Reed said. “[The invitational] has the best competitors in Massachusetts track and field. It’ll be exciting to see how our athletes stack up against the rest of the state.”

Next is the Last Chance Meet on February 2. Reed has several athletes on the cusp of qualifying for the Division 3 Championship and All States, so he plans to send a majority of his athletes to this one.

As for All States? He’s aiming to finish in the top 10, and expects that Colin McCabe will do well in the shot put.

The girls team took second place in the OCL Championship with 39 points, while Bridgewater-Raynham took the win with 75 points.

In the one mile run, Madison Lynch claimed a first place win with a time of 5:41.45. In the same run, Cassidy Vaccari finished in third place. Victoria LaBree, Meredith Nailor, and Beatriz Mazo finished second, third and fourth in the 55 meter hurdles.
