Car crashes into utility pole on Smith Neck Road

Emergency responders were on scene to handle a single-vehicle car crash on Smith Neck Road on February 28.

At 6:41 p.m., the driver of a 2016 Ford fusion crashed into a utility pole near 608 Smith Neck Road, splitting it at the base, said officials. Officers later identified the driver as Victor Simoes, 48, of Dartmouth.

"The guy was not looking up and somehow happened to run into the pole," said District No. 1 Fire Chief Brad Ellis.

Police notified both Eversource Electric and Comcast, officials said. No injuries were reported.

"I had never seen a traffic jam on Smith Neck Road. With the corner shut down, with the causeway shut down, it just shows the need for the fire department to be able to get through," said Ellis, noting that the accident was on the corner of Nonquitt Avenue and Smith Neck Road.

The Smith Neck and Gulf Road intersection is set to open in early June, said town officials at the February 27 Select Board meeting.
