Chamber musicians add guitarist for Latin American classics
Concert-goers at the South Coast Chamber Concert Series enjoyed an unusual twist on classical music: the introduction of the guitar.
The latest performance of the traveling chamber musicians, held on January 14, featured the usual array of violin, viola, cello, and piano. But a special guest brought guitar to the mix: Aaron Larget-Caplan.
The noted chamber guitarist led performances of everything from film scores by noted artist Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, to Spanish folk songs by Manuel de Falla.
“These were originally folk music that are being turned into classical music,” Aaron Larget-Caplan said of his line-up, adding that many of his pieces were traditional tangos which are now recognized as classical music.
The addition of a guitar to the mix does present a challenge, explained Don Krishnaswami, who plays the viola.
“The challenge is in acoustics,” Don said. “The guitar is generally quieter. We amplified the guitar today.”
The chamber musicians performed their first concert with Larget-Caplan the previous day in Marion, but noticed Larget-Caplan’s guitar struggled to break through, necessitating amplification on Sunday.
The South Coast Chamber Music Series is held at St. Gabriel’s Church in Marion and, as of last year, at St. Peter’s Church in Dartmouth.
“Last year was our first season at St. Peter’s,” Krishnaswami said. “It’s going splendidly. This is the second time we’ve had to bring out extra chairs,” he said as a standing-room crowd built before the performance began.
The next performance is titled "Chiaroscuro," and is scheduled for March 10 in Marion and March 11 in Dartmouth, both at 4 p.m.
