Chamber musicians enjoy new Dartmouth venue
A mix of violin, viola, cello, oboe, and piano players serenaded a group of approximately 100 guests, growing the South Coast Chamber Music Series’ popularity in Dartmouth.
The November 6 concert at St. Peter’s Church was the second concert in Dartmouth, following the inaugural concert on September 25. After merging with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra in 2014, the group performed at Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford, but that church was too big and many audience members came from Dartmouth, said Artistic Director Janice Weber.
Dartmouth provided a more close-knit, intimate venue space that filled to capacity, she said, so she decided to move performances to the 351 Elm Street location.
This month’s performance ranged from Beethoven to Hindemith, and featured an appearance by Donna Cobert. Cobert — the original founder of the South Coast Chamber Music Society — began the society in 2001 after noticing a demand for classical music in New Bedford. She retired in 2014, but still makes a yearly appearance to perform.
“After 13 years, it was time for me to move out of the founder’s position,” Cobert said.
Cobert said chamber members have played together for years, and many have grown to know each other.
“It’s what distinguishes us from other series: we’re a resident ensemble,” she said.
The chamber will perform at St. Peter’s Church again on January 15 and April 2, both at 4 p.m.
