Classic cars come out for Veterans Memorial

May 16, 2015

The rain held off long enough Saturday for over 60 classic cars to rev their engines through Dartmouth.

The Veterans Memorial Cruise was held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Council On Aging on Dartmouth Street, with proceeds raised at the event to go toward a new Veterans Memorial at the site.

“The weather held out,” said Dartmouth’s Veteran’s Agent, Roy Oliveira, one of the people in charge of organizing the event. “The people with antique cars — as soon as they see a threat of rain, they want to get them off the road. But a lot of people came out, so it was really pretty successful. It’s just a fun day.”

Earlier this week, representatives from Home Depot in Dartmouth came out to do some volunteer work at what Oliveira called “Phase 1” of the memorial.

There, the gazebo was given a facelift, pavers were installed, and landscaping was done to the area that currently has a POW/MIA Memorial Bench and another bronze plaque dedicated to veterans.

“We enjoy it,” said Torhild Blanchard, who was at the show with Paul St. Laurent, his dog, Sparky, and his bright red 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint.

“We’ll probably go from here to another car show in Fairhaven,” said St. Laurent. “We go to as many shows as we can.”

Barry Allemao was at the show with his 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe, a large, flashy two-door sedan.

“I come here and there,” he said. “A bunch of us guys come out every once in a while for these events.”

Oliveira said the new memorial would not be taking the place of the World War I memorial that currently stands in front of the Dartmouth police station. The goal of it is to take the place of a memorial that once stood at the old Dartmouth Town Hall (next door to the police station) which dilapidated over time.

Though no official plans exist for the new memorial, it will be located next to the existing memorial at the gazebo of the Council on Aging once enough funds are raised.

“We have a lot of senior veterans that utilize the Council on Aging here,” he said. “This gives them a place to come hang out. At least we have a place that they can congregate together.”
