Community falls for first family festival

Oct 23, 2021

Just a few weeks ago, the idea of hosting a fall family festival was a dream developed by three young mothers in hopes of uniting the community.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, that idea blossomed into a festival that filled the parking lot of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and drew a line of families waiting to enter and explore the entertainment options.

Autumn-themed attractions included a bounce house, Dartmouth police and fire vehicles, scarecrow building, games, cookie decorating and a lively performance by Toe Jam Puppet Band.

“I just can’t believe how many people’’ attended, said Molly Amando, who organized the festival with Nicole Kloss and Katie Soares. The success proves that “people are desperate for events like this in the area,’’ she said.

“I’m so proud of what these three moms did,’’ said Rev. Scott Ciosek, rector of the church who convinced the three to reach out to other families in the community. “This blows my mind.’’

The festival was an offshoot of a successful Facebook page the three women organized, Dartmouth Mom’s Group @ St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Within a day, 100 people had joined the group, which is not limited to church members. Membership has since more than doubled.

Those attending shared that enthusiasm. “This is wonderful,’’ said Katie Bruce. “I hope there’ll be more events like this, especially after Covid, when we’ve been trapped inside.’’

“We are so thrilled with the turnout,’’ Soares said. “Families are just thrilled to be outside.’’

Laurie Andriance, who attended with her family, gave the gathering a positive review. “It’s nice for the little ones to enjoy Halloween,’’ she said. “I think it’s wonderful.’’

Ciosek said he was especially pleased to see people connect with others they hadn’t seen in years.

Those interactions underscore the importance of the day, he said. “It’s all about engaging families in the community,’’ he said.
